bagels?

Postby stoke » Tue Feb 05, 2008 2:26 pm

When I first moved to santa cruz, I was having a bit of a bagel craving. Bagels don't exist in LA, but I thought for sure norcal might have some. So I made this post on the university message board.

Lets say in the mood for bagels.
One dozen of them. Freshly baked.
A tiny bit crunchy on the outside and soft on the inside. Ones so good you don't even need to toast or add anything to.

Am I dreaming I'm back east? Or can I acquire such things in Santa Cruz? Tell me please!

I got this gem of a response.

Since you're "from back east" and seem new to these parts I'll try to let you down softly. There are no good bagels here. Once more there are no good bagels in California, or east of the Mississippi for that matter. Wondering about where you can get a good bagel? First thing you do is get a map of the USA and one of those fake bagels they sell in this town. Then put the bagel on the map with the dead center of the bagel hole on NYC. Now look at the map and any place that is located in the hole of the bagel is where you can get a good bagel. Any where that the bagel covers is where you can get an “ok” bagel. Anywhere else you’re screwed.

The Bagel Bakery in Monterey used to make decent bagels - if you are in that direction you might take a look! I'm sure they aren't the best but they weren't bad. Bagels here suck in comparison but I'd rather deal with bad bagels than go to NYC

Yes it does - and on a tangent, at least one peanut butter manufacturer made a jarred peanut butter and bacon mixture in the 50's because peanut butter and bacon sandwiches were so popular then. I hadn't heard of it until recently! (I wandered off course but I'm hungry...)
